Kolkata, often referred to as the “City of Joy”, the term was popularized by Dominique Lapierre’s (French author) 1985 novel “City of Joy(French: La Cité de la joie)” which depicted the lives in the slum of Anand Nagar, which is based on the area of Pilkhana in Howrah, West Bengal, India.
Reasons that really make Kolkata the “City of Joy”
Festivals:
In Kolkata, we have a popular saying: “Baro Mase Tero Parbon” (A succession of festivities all year round). Festivals here are a way of life, a constant source of joy and celebration. While the rest of India celebrates Holi, we also have Dol. Alongside Rakhi, we celebrate Bhai Phota. Christmas brings us to Park Street, where we revel in the dazzling lights, and we enjoy Biryani on Eid with the same enthusiasm.
The crown jewel of our festivities is Durga Puja, celebrated for five glorious days. The entire city lights up with pandals, art, and celebrations, creating an unparalleled atmosphere of joy and community. During Diwali, we also celebrate Kali Puja, followed by Jagadhatri Puja and many more. Here in Kolkata, there is truly no end to happiness.
Food:
In Kolkata, food is more than just sustenance—it’s a way of life. From sipping tea in clay cups to devouring countless ‘Puchkas’ (even though many of us have a sweet tooth despite our diabetes!), food brings us endless joy. Our culinary delights include chicken and mutton rolls, crispy chops, and kachoris for snacks. And let’s not forget our biryani—the best there is. Debating this is futile; we are proud foodies!
Sports:
Eden Gardens isn’t just about cricket; it’s about the electrifying crowd and unparalleled energy. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal fuel our passion with their fierce rivalry and dedicated fandom. We celebrate every achievement, from Dola Banerjee’s archery shots and Leander Paes’ tennis medals to Sourav Ganguly’s legendary “Dadagiri.” Sports are in our veins, from KKR’s victory parades to gully cricket matches every Sunday. Kolkata without sports? Unthinkable!
Daily Life:
In North Kolkata, life unfolds in slim lanes filled with vibrant conversations and heated political debates. Whether collecting tram tickets, attending film festivals at ‘Nandan’, buying books on College Street, or taking a hand-pulled rickshaw ride home, life in Kolkata here is Simple, yet ‘BYAPOK’ (extensive), our daily routines are steeped in tradition and joy.
People:
Dominique Lapierre’s novel City of Joy captures the essence of Kolkata’s spirit. Set in the slum of Pilkhana in Howrah, the story reveals how people, despite facing poverty and hardships, live in harmony and happiness. They called their place Anand Nagar, meaning City of Joy. This is why Kolkata earned its nickname.
No matter the challenges, we Kolkatans find joy in the tiniest of things and embrace life with open arms.
